Blackouts and black coffee

Yesterday, amid black- and brownouts up and down 14th Street and in a host of other neighborhoods in the city, barista James & I worked in dimmed lights and with a very struggling AC.

Every time the door opened, a blast of that very distinct (and distinctly unpleasant) New York heat would smack us around like a birdie on a badminton court.

But you know what? Everyone was being so friendly, probably just to spite the heatwave. I mean seriously, so unexpectedly friendly. That's what they always say about New Yorkers, right? They shine in the face of adversity? Heck yeah they do. At least on 13th Street between Fifth and University, anyway.

And the best part? The shots were absolutely beautiful, all day.

I guess that would make just about anybody friendly, hm?
